President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rangers International FC after the club secured a historic ninth Nigeria Premier Football League title, drawing level with Enyimba F.C. as the most successful sides in NPFL history.
In a statement issued on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the Enugu-based club for what he described as a remarkable campaign that revived memories of the team’s dominance in Nigerian and African football.
According to Channels Television, Rangers finished the 2025/2026 NPFL season with 68 points from 38 matches, narrowly edging Rivers United FC in a dramatic title race.
Tinubu applauded the club’s management, players and supporters for their resilience throughout the season. He also credited the achievement to sustained investment in youth development and sporting infrastructure.
The President commended Peter Mbah for prioritising sports development in Enugu State, saying the success of Rangers reflected the impact of the administration’s support for youth and sports.
“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage,” Tinubu said.
The President also reflected on Rangers’ golden era in the 1970s and 1980s when the club won multiple domestic trophies, reached the final of the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1975 and lifted the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.
Rangers sealed the title with a 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City F.C. at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on the final day of the season. Rivers United defeated Katsina United 3-0 but fell short in the championship race.
Tinubu also praised Rivers United for their professionalism and sportsmanship during the season and wished both clubs success as Nigeria’s representatives in next season’s CAF Champions League.
The final day also confirmed relegation for defending champions Remo Stars F.C., alongside Elkanami Warriors, Bayelsa United F.C. and Wikki Tourists F.C..
