Thousands of travellers faced severe delays on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway due to ongoing road rehabilitation and heavy rainfall during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The traffic gridlock, which has lasted all week, prompted David Umahi, minister of works, to instruct contractors to reopen all accessible sections immediately. The directive was issued through a statement by Francis Nwaze, the minister’s media aide.
Security agencies have been deployed at strategic points along the corridor to maintain order and ensure the safety of commuters. Umahi confirmed that an earlier accident, which had worsened congestion, had been cleared.
The Abuja-Kaduna highway is a key route linking the Federal Capital Territory to northern states. Commuters reported exhausting journeys extending well beyond typical travel times due to the combined effects of construction and the holiday rush.
