Victor Udoh dies of food poisoning at 21 after returning to Nigeria

Former Southampton forward Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21 after reportedly being found dead in Abuja.

 

According to Channels Television, the Nigerian striker had recently returned home following the end of the 2025/2026 season with Czech club Dynamo České Budějovice.

Reports said Udoh went out with friends the night before his death and was discovered dead the following morning. While the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, early reports suggested possible food or alcohol poisoning.

Udoh began his football journey with Hypebuzz FC in Abuja before moving to Belgian side Royal Antwerp in 2023. He impressed with 12 goals in 21 appearances for the Young Reds and later made his senior debut against Charleroi.

The forward later joined Southampton FC on a three-and-a-half-year deal before leaving the club by mutual consent. He signed for Dynamo České Budějovice in October 2025.

Southampton paid tribute to their former player in a statement shared on X.

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21. The thoughts of everyone at SaintsFC go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time,” the club wrote.

Royal Antwerp also expressed shock over the footballer’s death, offering condolences to his family and friends.

The death of the young striker has sparked grief among football fans and the wider Nigerian football community.

The state government expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed its collaboration with federal authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
