A joint operation by the Nigerian military and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reportedly killed 21 fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.

According to TheCable, citing counter-insurgency publication by Zagazola Makama, the air strike was carried out on Saturday in Arege, located in Kukawa Local Government Area, following intelligence and surveillance reports confirming the presence of insurgents in the area.

The operation targeted a terrorist camp where ISWAP fighters were allegedly planning attacks across the Lake Chad Basin.

Sources quoted by Makama said the precision strike eliminated 21 terrorists and significantly disrupted the group’s operational capacity.

The report described the mission as intelligence-driven and carefully executed, forming part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States aimed at degrading terrorist networks, destroying insurgent hideouts and restricting their movement across the North-East.

Military sources reportedly said the success of the operation highlights growing collaboration between Nigerian security agencies and international partners in the fight against terrorism.

The latest strike comes just weeks after another series of joint US-Nigeria air operations reportedly killed more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters in Metele, also in Borno State.
