The Oyo State House of Assembly has called for the urgent deployment of enhanced security measures in schools across the state following recent abductions of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, Channels Television reports.

Lawmakers raised concern over the attacks at Community High School, Esiele, and L.A. Primary School, Yawota, where unidentified assailants reportedly targeted educational facilities, heightening fears about student safety.

During plenary on Tuesday, the motion was moved by Hon. Oluwafemi Oluwafowokanmi, representing Ibadan South West State Constituency II, who urged the state government to strengthen protection around schools through coordinated security deployment.

He called for the involvement of the Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to improve surveillance, especially in rural and forest-adjacent communities.

Lawmakers also stressed that schools have become increasingly vulnerable to kidnapping, vandalism and other criminal activities, warning that continued insecurity could discourage parents from enrolling children in public institutions.

The Assembly recommended a phased deployment of trained personnel, alongside collaboration with the Ministry of Education, SUBEB and TESCOM, to carry out security audits across schools.

They further proposed the establishment of a structured school security framework, including emergency response systems, perimeter fencing standards, controlled access points and improved lighting.

In addition, the House called for integration of security education and safety drills into school curricula to equip pupils with basic emergency response skills.

The motion also highlighted concerns that the current strength of about 2,500 Amotekun operatives may not be sufficient to secure all schools in the state, prompting calls for additional recruitment, including community-based security support.
