Okonkwo warns Obi over defamation suit, hints at disclosures

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the 2023 presidential campaign of Peter Obi, has warned that he may disclose confidential information if the opposition figure proceeds with a defamation lawsuit against him.

In a series of posts on X, Okonkwo, now associated with the African Democratic Congress, described the reported legal action as unnecessary and urged Obi against taking his former associate to court.

The dispute follows allegations made by Okonkwo during a television interview on Channels Television, where he claimed that Obi and elements within the political structure demanded payments from legislative aspirants in exchange for party tickets. Those allegations were later denied by one of the individuals mentioned, who said payments were made to a party account and not to Obi directly.

Obi has reportedly issued a demand for ₦5 billion in damages, citing reputational harm, and signalled intent to pursue legal action over the comments.

Reacting to the development, Okonkwo doubled down on his claims, publishing screenshots of private communications and insisting he was prepared to defend his statements in court. He also suggested that his past role in the campaign gave him access to sensitive information, which he could disclose if the matter escalates legally.

Okonkwo stated that any confidential material obtained during his time as spokesperson should not be used against Obi unless legal proceedings compel him to respond.

The situation has intensified tensions between both figures, who were previously allies during the 2023 election campaign, as reported by TheCable.
