The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following a security alert over a suspected plot to abduct students.

The directive follows intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS), warning of a potential mass kidnapping targeting schools in the northern part of the state.

In a circular issued on Wednesday, Enodolomwanyi Otamere, Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, said the affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School.

The statement explained that the decision was based on credible security advisories concerning risks to students, teachers and surrounding communities.

Authorities confirmed that all academic and non-academic activities in the schools have been suspended until further notice as a precautionary measure.

However, candidates sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will still be allowed to access examination centres under strict security arrangements.

School principals have been directed to release students in an orderly manner, secure school premises and maintain communication with security agencies.

Parents and residents were also urged to remain calm while security operations continue.

The development comes amid rising concerns over attacks on educational institutions in parts of Nigeria, including recent abductions in Oyo State and Borno State.

The alert was issued following intelligence from the Department of Security Services, while the closure affects schools in Edo State within the Akoko-Edo area.
