The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has trained political party officials on the use of its electronic candidate nomination system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The training, held in Abuja, focused on preparing designated party officials to use the commission’s Candidate Nomination Portal, through which political parties will submit the details and particulars of candidates contesting various elective positions in the 2027 polls. According to INEC, the exercise is aimed at ensuring a smooth, transparent and error-free nomination process.

INEC Chairman, Joash Ojo Amupitan, said access codes for the nomination portal would be issued to political parties from June 26, enabling authorised national officers to upload candidates’ information electronically. He urged parties to ensure that their ICT personnel and relevant officials are adequately prepared for the process.

The commission emphasised that the portal is fully automated and that deadlines for submissions will be strictly observed. Political parties were advised to carefully verify all candidate information before uploading it to avoid mistakes that could affect nominations.

INEC said the electronic nomination system is designed to improve efficiency, enhance transparency and reduce disputes arising from candidate submissions. The commission also used the training to address common challenges encountered during previous nomination exercises and to familiarise party officials with updated procedures.

The training comes as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace, with political parties expected to conclude internal processes and submit the particulars of their nominated candidates through the online platform within the timelines set by the electoral body.
