A newborn baby has been rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed building 32 hours after twin earthquakes devastated parts of Venezuela’s northern coast.
The dramatic rescue took place late Friday in the hardest-hit city of La Guaira, where emergency workers carefully pulled the infant from beneath the debris to applause from onlookers.
Video shared on social media showed rescuers working under floodlights before passing the baby, wrapped in a quilt, from person to person. The child was then gently cleaned with tissues before being taken for medical attention.
The rescue has become a symbol of hope following the powerful earthquakes that caused widespread destruction across the coastal region. Search-and-rescue teams have continued working around the clock to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Authorities have not immediately released details about the baby’s condition or whether other family members were found.
