A three-storey private hostel housing students of Federal Polytechnic Oko has collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with an unknown number of occupants feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly caved in late on Sunday, triggering panic in the Oko Polytechnic community as residents and students reported hearing cries for help from under the debris.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Anambra State Police Command, the Anambra State Fire Service, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other security agencies, launched a search and rescue operation at the scene.
Several injured victims have been rescued and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while rescue teams continue efforts to reach others believed to be trapped.
Authorities said the exact number of casualties and trapped occupants could not be confirmed as rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of reporting.
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said a police-led joint security team secured the area and coordinated emergency response efforts to minimise further loss of life.
He urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and stay away from the scene to allow rescue workers unrestricted access.
The police spokesperson added that more verified updates would be provided as rescue operations progress.
