US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the US state of New Mexico “New America”, continuing a series of controversial proposals to change the names of prominent geographical landmarks.
Trump made the suggestion on Sunday in a social media post, saying that “many people” had proposed changing New Mexico’s name to “NEW AMERICA”.
The White House also reposted an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America”.
However, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham quickly rejected the proposal, telling Fox News that the state’s name “isn’t up for debate” and predates the United States.
The governor also accused Trump of seeking to distract Americans from domestic concerns, including rising petrol prices.
The proposal comes days after Trump suggested renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, a move Canada has rejected.
Trump has also previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”. Mexico rejected that change, which applies to US federal usage but does not alter the internationally recognised name.
Last week, Trump similarly suggested calling the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” amid the continuing conflict with Iran, before later appearing to indicate that he was not being serious.
Some US media reports said the New Mexico proposal may have originated as an internet hoax before Trump amplified it.
