Arsenal came from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, maintaining their perfect start to the Premier League season.
Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early lead after just 77 seconds, but Arsenal responded through former Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz, who equalised in the 25th minute.
Martin Ødegaard completed the comeback five minutes after half-time, calmly finishing from close range following a clever Arsenal move.
The victory means Arsenal have won all three of their league matches and sit second behind Manchester City on goals scored. The result also ended Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the campaign.
Rogers, who Chelsea signed from Aston Villa for a reported £117 million, stunned the home crowd with an early low volley after Reece James’ free-kick was not properly cleared.
Arsenal gradually took control, with Havertz finding space on the right before firing through Maxence Lacroix’s legs to beat Emiliano Martínez.
Chelsea almost regained the lead before half-time when Pedro Neto struck the far post.
Arsenal then produced the decisive moment in the 50th minute. Christos Tzolis found Havertz with an incisive pass, and the German’s dummy allowed Ødegaard to run through and score from 10 yards.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser late on, but David Raya denied Estevao Willian with a strong save, while Malo Gusto fired over from a promising position.
The defeat was Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso’s first after three consecutive wins in all competitions since taking charge during the close season.
The result gives Arsenal an early advantage in the title race as Mikel Arteta’s side continue their bid to retain the Premier League crown.
