Veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84.

The actor’s death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Olusoji announced the passing of the veteran actor on behalf of the family, describing him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote.

The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the loss.

“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” Olusoji added.

Jacobs, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, was born on July 11, 1942. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before building a career across British television, international films and Nollywood.

He appeared in several British productions and international films before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the most recognised figures in the Nigerian film industry.

Jacobs starred in more than 100 Nollywood productions during his decades-long career and received several honours for his contribution to acting, including the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour in 2011.

He and fellow veteran actress Joke Silva also co-founded the Lufodo Group, which has interests in film, theatre and performing arts.

Jacobs’ death comes just two months after Silva publicly celebrated his 84th birthday in July, describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo”.

The family has asked the public to respect its privacy while it mourns the veteran actor.
