Russia denies allegations linking hunger protest, accuses US, UK of meddling in Nigeria’s internal affairs

The Russian government has distanced itself from allegations linking it to recent hunger protest in Nigeria.

The government said claims linking it to the protest were coordinated media campaigns by Western and Ukrainian officials in attempts to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs and “shift the blame for any consequences onto the Russian Federation.”

Russia in a letter to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was shared on Friday by the official Press Secretary of the Russian embassy in Nigeria, Yury Paramonov, faulted statements it credited to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Director of the British Council in Nigeria David Roberts, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Nigeria, Ivan Kholostenko suggesting that the use of Russian flags during recent protests is evidence of Russia’s interference.

Recall some protesters during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest in August were seen waving the Russian flag while chanting slogans, a development that has since generated controversies.

Russia has recently been accused of involvement in recent political upheavals in some West African countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The countries which recently experienced military coups had cut off ties with former colonial master, France, while establishing new ties with Russia, a development which has generated some concerns.

Russia in reaction to the recent allegation on the Nigerian protest claimed that the United States, Britain and Ukraine were linking it with the protests to destroy the cordial relationship between it and Nigeria, advising the Federal government to ignore the claims.

“In particular, statements by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Director of the British Council in Nigeria David Roberts, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Nigeria Ivan Kholostenko have shamelessly and baselessly suggested that the use of Russian flags during recent protests is evidence of Russia’s interference and have further warned that this could happen again in the future.

“The Embassy categorically rejects such accusations and reiterates that the Russian Federation neither had any involvement in the protests that occurred in the recent past nor does it have any connection to any potential future demonstrations or unrest,” the letter read partly.

The government said “Russia has always respected the sovereignty of Nigeria. We strictly adhere to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states.

“By contrast, the coordinated media campaign by Western and Ukrainian officials and outlets clearly points to their attempts to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs and shift the blame for any consequences onto the Russian Federation.

“We greatly value the level of relations between our two countries, support only peaceful dialogue within the legal framework as the proper means to resolve any internal disputes, and once again express our unwavering support for the leadership and the people of Nigeria.”

Yuri said the Embassy had conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations to President Bola Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s National Day.

“The Embassy also extends its best wishes to the people and Government of Nigeria for prosperity and stability, and we hope for continued cooperation and deepening relations between our two countries,” he said.

IPOB suspends Nnamdi Kanu as leader over ‘unguarded utterances’

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, citing concerns over what it described as “unguarded utterances” and actions that could endanger members of the movement.   In a statement issued by Chikadibia Edoziem, head of IPOB’s Directorate of State (DOS), the group’s highest decision-making body, the organisation said Kanu had also been removed as director of Radio Biafra as part of efforts to restructure and strengthen its operations. According to IPOB, the decision was reached during a DOS meeting on June 17 following a review of an intelligence report concerning an alleged meeting involving Kanu and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) while in custody at Sokoto prison. The group said IPOB was founded as a self-determination movement by Biafrans in the diaspora and maintained that no individual possesses the authority to dissolve its leadership structure. Edoziem stated that the DOS considered concerns that Kanu’s communications and movements were being monitored by security agencies, adding that some prison communications had allegedly resulted in the arrest and deaths of IPOB members. The statement also alleged the existence of plans to establish a new militia that could trigger fresh violence in the South-East and weaken the IPOB movement by targeting its leadership structure. IPOB said the suspension was aimed at preventing criminal activities from being carried out under the authority of the office of the leader and to stop actions that could lead to arrests, torture and the deaths of young people in the region. The group further stated that individuals or groups claiming legitimacy from the now-suspended office of the leader would bear sole responsibility for any actions undertaken in IPOB’s name without authorisation from the Directorate of State. The development marks a significant shift within the separatist organisation, with the DOS emphasising that IPOB would no longer be held accountable for actions carried out by persons not holding active positions within the movement. Kanu’s Conviction and Appeal Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in November 2025. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on four counts, while additional prison terms of 20 years and five years were imposed on separate charges. During the trial, DSS officials testified that Kanu admitted to making broadcasts that allegedly incited attacks on police officers. Another witness linked violence that followed the #EndSARS protests to comments attributed to the IPOB leader. Kanu has since appealed the conviction.
