The Portuguese Football Federation has reaffirmed its support for Cristiano Ronaldo to continue representing Portugal, with federation president Pedro Proença describing the veteran forward as an icon of Portuguese football.   Proença said Ronaldo remains an important member of the national team whenever he is fit and available, while defending his continued selection based on his performances. “Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in history. He has dedicated more than two decades to Portuguese football and is the ultimate symbol of Portuguese identity,” Proença said in a statement shared on the federation’s X account on Monday. He added that Ronaldo’s place in the squad was justified by his sporting ability and that the forward would remain part of the team whenever he was fit and ready. The federation chief also addressed reports of a disagreement between Ronaldo and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, describing the issue as a misunderstanding that should be resolved internally. “What happened between him and Jorge Jesus was simply a misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally,” Proença said. According to Proença, Ronaldo remains firmly connected to the national team and captained Portugal in the first of four matches. He also pointed to Ronaldo’s decision to continue playing for Portugal as evidence of his strong attachment to the national team. Proença said Ronaldo could have ended his international career at the World Cup but chose to continue because of his love for Portugal. With the four matches completed, the federation president said there was now time for Ronaldo and Jesus to resolve their differences. “Now that the four matches are over, we have the time and calm to sit down together and resolve the misunderstanding,” he said. Proença concluded that Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s football legacy and would continue to be available whenever the coach wanted him. The development comes amid continued uncertainty over the 41-year-old forward’s international future, with Portugal preparing for the next phase of his career with the national team.

Hackers have gained unauthorised access to personal information belonging to about 8.8 million people in Denmark, the country’s Ministry of Digital Affairs has said.   The breach affected Denmark’s national population registry, known as the CPR registry, which contains sensitive personal details, including names, addresses and social security numbers. According to the ministry, the hackers accessed the registry through a Danish company that was legally authorised to access the database. The government said the company’s access to the registry has not been revoked. “This is an extremely serious incident,” Digital Affairs Minister Christina Egelund said, according to a ministry statement. Authorities are investigating the breach and working to determine its full scope. The hackers responsible have not yet been identified. Although Denmark has a population of about six million, its national registry contains information on roughly 11 million people. The database also includes records of people who have died or emigrated from the country. The Danish government said the unauthorised access involved information on around 8.8 million registered individuals, including people whose records remain in the registry despite no longer living in Denmark. The incident highlights the risks surrounding access to government databases containing large amounts of sensitive personal information.

Extreme heat is putting pregnant women and newborns at increasing risk, the United Nations (UN) has warned, as rising global temperatures are increasingly linked to serious complications during pregnancy and childbirth.   UN climate chief Simon Stiell is expected to raise the alarm at the pre-COP31 summit in Nadi, Fiji, on Monday, citing new research showing the growing health impact of extreme heat on mothers and babies. According to the survey, more than two-thirds of health professionals across five continents reported seeing complications linked to intense heat over the past five years. “Rising temperatures mean rising danger in pregnancy,” Stiell is expected to tell delegates. He is also expected to highlight links between climate-driven extreme heat during pregnancy and premature birth, stillbirth, low birth weight and maternal complications. The survey of 1,000 midwives and doctors in the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Brazil and Zimbabwe was commissioned by the Wellcome charitable foundation. Nearly all respondents said they had cared for mothers or babies affected by extreme heat. About one-third reported cases involving low birth weight or restricted growth, feeding difficulties, dehydration and heat-related illnesses that they believed were caused by extreme heat. Stiell is expected to describe the situation as a growing fault line in the global climate crisis, warning that worsening heat could deepen climate-related inequality and suffering. Wellcome chairwoman and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said mothers and babies were facing increasing risks from climate change. “Extreme heat is an invisible killer, but pregnant women must not be invisible,” Gillard said, urging leaders to act on the available evidence and solutions. The warning comes as climate scientists report that climate change is intensifying extreme weather events and contributing to more frequent heat records. According to AFP analysis of data from the European Union’s Copernicus climate observatory, about 33 countries across western Europe, the Sahel and Central America recorded their hottest July since records began this year. The pre-COP31 summit in Fiji and Tuvalu is being used by Pacific leaders to highlight the impact of climate change on communities on the frontline of rising temperatures and extreme weather. The meeting comes ahead of COP31, the UN-backed global climate summit scheduled to take place in Turkey next month.
