Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each from the Federal Government following their record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title.
The National Sports Commission confirmed that the players’ accounts were credited on September 9, 2026, as part of the Presidential Reward announced after their 2025 Afrobasket triumph.
Team officials also received the naira equivalent of $50,000 each. The NSC said all recipients had confirmed receipt of the payments.
D’Tigress secured their fifth straight Afrobasket crown and seventh title overall in 2025, further extending Nigeria’s dominance in the continental women’s basketball competition.
The commission said the latest cash payment completed all components of the rewards promised to the team by President Bola Tinubu.
The package included three-bedroom flats in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger and cash payments of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.
According to the NSC, the players and officials received the title documents for their Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France. The documents were signed by President Tinubu.
The commission said the cash component was paid following D’Tigress’ participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The NSC also provided an update on the Presidential Rewards promised to the Super Falcons.
The women’s football team have received title documents for their three-bedroom Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours. The documents were presented during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026.
The Falcons are also due to receive the naira equivalent of $100,000 per player and $50,000 per official. The NSC said the cash component is expected to be paid before their next official engagements.
The commission described the rewards as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to prioritise the welfare of Nigerian athletes.
The NSC also credited the Ministries of Finance, the Federal Capital Territory, Housing and Urban Development, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, as well as the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, for their roles in implementing the presidential rewards.
