Seven children were rescued on Sunday after fire gutted a storey building occupied by an orphanage home on Wole Madariola Street in the Aguda area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, in a statement on Monday, revealed that the inferno was caused by a power surge that emanated from an air conditioning unit in the building.

The Permanent Secretary Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu said the Agency received the distress call on the fire incident at about 2:43 pm.

The statement read in part, “A one-storey building housing an orphanage/motherless babies home, was engulfed by fire which reportedly started from an air conditioning unit in the house as a result of a power surge which was said to have quickly spread out.

“A total of seven boys with ages ranging between one and seven years were quickly evacuated from the Home and safely relocated to the compound opposite the Home.

“Management Team of the Home informed LRT of plans to relocate the children to the house of the owner of the Home temporarily, to ensure their welfare was sustained.

“The fire which had initially spread to the storage room of the home has been extinguished with dampening down concluded.”

“Post Disaster Assessment revealed that the whole of the first floor was salvaged, while the fire was contained in the store room. The rest of the ground floor was also salvaged.

The LASEMA boss further disclosed that the children were formally handed over to the Deputy Director, Mr Balogun, and Mrs Rasheedat Sadik, both of the Child Protection Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, who then formally handed the seven children over to the RED CROSS.

He added that no injuries, nor casualties were recorded in the near-fatal incident. The operation, he said, was successfully concluded in record time.

Nigeria international goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor has joined Crystal Palace Women on a two-year deal ahead of the 2026/27 Women’s Super League season.   The 21-year-old goalkeeper completed her move from Portsmouth, where she made six appearances across all competitions after joining the club in July 2025. Crystal Palace announced the signing on Thursday, welcoming Erhabor as the latest addition to their squad. Erhabor said she was excited about the move and viewed it as an important step in her career. “It feels really good to be here. I’m very excited to get started.” Palace manager Jo Potter also welcomed the Nigerian international, describing her as a promising young goalkeeper. Erhabor began her football career at the Brighton & Hove Albion Academy before gaining experience on loan at Hibernian and Plymouth Argyle. Born in the Netherlands and raised in England, she chose to represent Nigeria internationally. She made her Super Falcons debut in February 2026 during a friendly against Cameroon. She was subsequently included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. However, she did not feature during the tournament as the Super Falcons were eliminated by eventual champions Cameroon in the quarter-finals. Her move to Crystal Palace follows another recent transfer involving a Super Falcons player in England.
