A renowned felon named Kabir Bala was put to death by the Joint Security Team in Kogi State in connection with the passing of Salome Abu, the female leader of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the state’s commissioner of police, Akeem Yusuf, revealed that on Wednesday, Bala met his demise in Ejule in the state’s Ofu Local Government Area.

He said, “It would be recalled that the Kogi State Government, in October 2018, granted pardon in the prerogative of mercy as part of rehabilitation to one notorious gang leader named Kabir Bala, aka Okwo, in Ejule, Ofu LGA.

“However, the said Kabir Bala remained an unrepentant criminal with lots of atrocities traced to him which includes dealing in illegal arms, kidnappings and killings in the state

“Several cases had been traced to him such as the burning alive of Mrs Salome Abu, a PDP woman leader in Olu LGA, in her residence on November 2015, at Ochadamu, and the killing of two gala youths, Umoru Abeh and Unerwu Sule on April 20, 2022, at Ejule.”

Yusuf explained that Bala also killed five Fulani herders including Ibrahim, Haruna and Shuaibu Wang on Alloma Road, in the Ofu LGA in April 2022, and Muhammed and Dauda on March 3, 2023.

He said, “Other crimes committed by Kabir Bala and his gang included an attack on troops of the Nigerian Navy and dispossessing them of four rifles at the Alloma village on March 4, 2022. However, the firearms were later returned to the Navy following a high-powered intervention.

“Attack on Elisha Aya, a pastor and founder of the Kingdom Faith Assembly, Ejule, on March 18, 2022, who later paid N1m to Bala as a levy for establishing a church; invasion of Egane Fulani settlement; burning of 213 huts; rustled 122 cows on December 25, 2022, and assault on the Lord’s Chosen Church, Ejule, on January 29, 2023, for disturbing his hotel with their service, during which a worshipper, Joy Abuh, sustained a gunshot injury on her left hand.”

The police boss said Bala was also responsible for seven kidnappings along Itobe-Anyigba Highway from May 5 to 28, 2023.

According to him, based on the above facts, the decision reached at the state security council meeting held on June 20, 2023, that the state pardon granted to Bala in 2018 be revoked immediately while security agencies must go after him and arrest him immediately for prosecution alongside known accomplices.

He added, “Joint operations should be set up comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police, DSS, and Civil Defence, to go after Kabir Bala and his gang to arrest them and recover the arms in their possession.

“Today, June 22, 2023, around 04.30am in pursuit of Kabir Bala and his gang members, on sighting the joint security team, opened fire on them and started shooting sporadically.

“The team engaged the hoodlums and Kabir Bala was neutralised in the process while other members of his gang escaped with varying degrees of injury.”

He said items recovered from his premises included one AK 47 rifle with three fully loaded magazines, six locally-fabricated weapons and two phones and charms

He noted that the ongoing onslaught against criminal activities would be sustained to ensure the safety of lives and properties in the state.

Burnt-out passenger bus after a Russian strike in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, on October 8, 2026.

30 civilians killed as Russian strike hits buses in Ukraine

At least 30 people have been killed after two passenger buses were struck by a Russian glide bomb in Kramatorsk, a frontline city in eastern Ukraine, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to vow that the attack would not go unanswered.   Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians in Thursday’s attack, October 8, describing it as one of the deadliest single strikes in recent weeks. Photographs released by local authorities showed the burnt-out remains of the buses, with debris and bodies scattered across the road. Zelensky warned that the death toll could rise and called on the international community to respond to the attack. “Russia is trying to destroy all life in (the) Donbas (region) and the world must respond to this,” he wrote on Telegram. Police said the buses were hit by a glide bomb, while emergency services reported that three additional people were killed in shelling in a nearby village. The attack came a day after a Russian missile strike destroyed a five-storey apartment building in Pryluky, in northern Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. The earlier strike reportedly killed 22 people, including five children. Ukraine Accuses Russia of Targeting Civilians Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilians and disregarding international humanitarian law. Kramatorsk City Council also condemned the attack, describing it as another crime against the civilian population. The council said the location had no military targets, although the city has served as an important logistics and supply hub for Ukraine’s military throughout the conflict. Kramatorsk, which had a pre-war population of approximately 150,000, remains one of the key cities in the eastern Donetsk region that Russian forces have yet to capture. The city forms part of Ukraine’s so-called fortress belt, a network of strategically important locations that Ukrainian troops are fighting to retain. Civilian Deaths Mount as Attacks Intensify The latest casualties have renewed concerns about the growing toll on civilians as Russia and Ukraine intensify long-range attacks during the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The United Nations has verified more than 17,000 civilian deaths since the invasion, while warning that the actual figure is considerably higher. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who visited the site of the Pryluky attack on Thursday, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of pursuing a strategy of terrorising civilians. His remarks came as the United Kingdom announced additional sanctions against Moscow. Zelensky also urged the United States to increase pressure on Russia, including by supplying Ukraine with improved air defence systems, to push Putin towards negotiations. Kyiv Faces Worsening Security Situation Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, has also experienced increasingly intense attacks, including a barrage of Russian ballistic and cruise missiles and fast-moving, jet-powered drones on Wednesday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said three people were killed and 14 injured in the capital on Thursday. Key transport bridges, railway infrastructure and parts of the energy network have also come under attack. Klitschko warned that Kyiv, which had been relatively spared from the destruction experienced in frontline areas during the early years of the war, needed to prepare for worsening security conditions. Meanwhile, Russian forces have advanced towards the eastern outskirts of Kramatorsk, prompting calls for civilians remaining in the area to relocate to safer parts of Ukraine. Following Thursday’s attack, Filashkin ordered the suspension of public transport in Kramatorsk and neighbouring Sloviansk, citing a sharp deterioration in security. Ukraine launched a counter-offensive against Russian forces around Lyman, north of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, last month. Ukrainian authorities reported some success in regaining pockets of territory.
