Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu has won an Emmy Award for his character design work on Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda, marking a major international achievement for the Lagos-based creative.
Dunkwu received the Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Character Design award for the episode Into the Lion’s Den of the Disney+ animated series.
The Television Academy announced him among the 2026 juried Emmy winners in August, with the award presented during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies in Los Angeles in September. Unlike competitive Emmy categories, juried awards are decided by panels of industry professionals.
According to Channels Television, Dunkwu has built his career from Lagos as a visual development artist, character designer, animation director and educator, with a portfolio that includes work for Marvel, Netflix and Disney.
From engineering to global animation
Dunkwu studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin but developed his artistic skills independently before moving into comics, illustration, concept art and animation.
His professional credits include character design work on Eyes of Wakanda, as well as the animated series Iyanu and Iyanu: The Age of Wonders.
His work on Eyes of Wakanda
Dunkwu joined the production of Eyes of Wakanda in August 2021 as an early concept artist.
He worked on initial character ideation under Todd Harris and developed early designs for five Dora Milaje characters, including Noni. The designs later helped guide character development across the series under the supervision of Joshua James Shaw.
Dunkwu subsequently refined Noni and contributed to designs across all four episodes, working on characters including Old Noni, Kuda, Tafari, High Councilman Rakim, an 1885 Wakandan Queen, Lion Captain and crowd characters.
The Emmy-winning episode, Into the Lion’s Den, focuses on a rogue Wakandan general known as the Lion. The series follows Wakandan warriors across different periods of history as they seek to recover vibranium artefacts and protect Wakanda.
‘This win is for Nigeria’
Following the announcement, Dunkwu dedicated the achievement to his family and emerging artists from Nigeria and the Global South.
He said the recognition showed that Nigerian creatives could compete on the international stage.
“Out of hundreds of entries, my work on Eyes Of Wakanda was selected as worthy for an Emmy win,” Dunkwu said in a social media post.
He added that the award was “for the rising talents from Nigeria and the global south”, while thanking Marvel Studios, the Television Academy and the Eyes of Wakanda creative team.
Dunkwu also described the award as a life-changing moment for himself and his family, dedicating it to rising artists from Nigeria and the Global South.
Bringing African influences to Marvel
Dunkwu’s contribution to Eyes of Wakanda is particularly notable given the series’ strong focus on African history, culture and visual influences.
His character designs span different historical periods and settings within Wakanda. The wider production also involved artists from several African countries, including Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.
The Emmy is not Dunkwu’s first major recognition for his work on the Marvel project. He previously received a Concept Art Association award for animated-series character concept art for Noni.
Beyond production work, Dunkwu has shared tutorials, courses and educational content aimed at helping aspiring artists develop character-design skills, including work influenced by African aesthetics.
His Emmy win adds to a growing list of achievements for Nigerian creatives contributing to major international film and animation productions.
