The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others after finding them guilty of various disciplinary offences.
According to TheCable, the commission announced that the dismissed officers were found culpable of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts unbecoming of public officers. The decision was reached during the PSC’s plenary meeting held in Abuja.
PSC spokesperson Torty Njoku Kalu said the disciplinary exercise also saw 10 senior officers demoted, while two officers were compulsorily retired in the public interest.
Among those demoted, three Superintendents of Police were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police were downgraded to Assistant Superintendent of Police, while five Assistant Superintendents of Police were reduced to the rank of Inspector.
The commission also issued severe reprimands to 10 officers, reprimands to five others, warning letters to three officers, and a letter of advice to one officer. Seven officers investigated during the process were exonerated and cleared of any wrongdoing.
PSC Chairman Hashimu Salihu Argungu said the commission would not tolerate indiscipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
He added that the commission remains committed to enforcing discipline and ensuring that officers found guilty of misconduct face appropriate sanctions.
The disciplinary measures, according to the PSC, are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen professionalism, accountability and public confidence in the police. TheCable first reported the development.
