The United States has announced an increment in the price of certain visa application fees for nonimmigrant visa applications (NIV) and border crossing cards (BCC) applicable to Mexicans.

The announcement, which was made public in a news bulletin released by the Department of State today, June 1, 2023, stated that the increase is applicable to “Mexican citizens age 15 and above”.

The increment will see the “fee for visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2s and BCCs), and other non-petition based NIVs such as student and exchange visitor visas, will increase from $160 to $185.

“The fee for certain petition-based nonimmigrant visas for temporary workers (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories) will increase from $190 to $205. The fee for a treaty trader, treaty investor, and treaty applicants in a specialty occupation (E category) will increase from $205 to $315”.

The Department of State, which stated that the United States is “committed to facilitating legitimate travel to the United States for both immigrant and nonimmigrant travelers”, also stated that the new fees will be effective on the 17th of June, 2023.

According to the statement, “the fee for visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2s and BCCs), and other non-petition based NIVs such as student and exchange visitor visas, will increase from $160 to $185.

“The fee for certain petition-based nonimmigrant visas for temporary workers (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories) will increase from $190 to $205. The fee for a treaty trader, treaty investor, and treaty applicants in a specialty occupation (E category) will increase from $205 to $315.

The statement reads : “The Department of State is committed to facilitating legitimate travel to the United States for both immigrant and nonimmigrant travelers.

“The Department of State recently published a Final Rule regarding increases to certain nonimmigrant visa application (NIV) processing fees and the Border Crossing Card (BCC) for Mexican citizens age 15 and over. The effective date of the fee increase is postponed from May 30 to June 17, 2023. On June 17, the fee for visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2s and BCCs), and other non-petition based NIVs such as student and exchange visitor visas, will increase from $160 to $185. The fee for certain petition-based nonimmigrant visas for temporary workers (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories) will increase from $190 to $205. The fee for a treaty trader, treaty investor, and treaty applicants in a specialty occupation (E category) will increase from $205 to $315.

“NIV fees are set based on the actual cost of providing NIV services and are determined after conducting a study of the cost of these services. The Department uses an Activity-Based Costing (ABC) methodology to calculate, annually, the cost of providing consular services, including visa services. The fees for most non-petition based NIVs were last updated in 2012, and certain other NIV fees were last updated in 2014.

“Other consular fees are not affected by this rule, including the waiver of the two-year residency required fee for certain exchange visitors.

Visas for work and tourism are essential to President Biden’s foreign policy, and we recognize the critical role international travel plays in the U.S. economy.

Davido attacks Oyetola as Osun election tension rises

Afrobeats star Davido has publicly criticised Gboyega Oyetola, accusing the former Osun State governor of political desperation ahead of the state’s governorship election. According to TheCable Lifestyle, the singer made the comments on Tuesday through social media posts, where he described Oyetola as “the most desperate politician in the world” and alleged that his plans in Osun would fail. Davido wrote on X that Oyetola was “very embarrass”, before following up with another post claiming the current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy was plotting to cause trouble in the state. The outburst comes as political activities intensify before the August 15 governorship election in Osun. The singer has become increasingly active in the state’s politics in recent months. The comments also follow allegations by Accord Party that thugs linked to the All Progressives Congress attacked the campaign office of Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo. TheCable reported that the party’s national chairman, Maxwell Mgbuden, said the attack was the second on the governor’s campaign office within two weeks. He alleged that armed men fired shots, shattered windows and vandalised offices inside the building. Mgbuden further claimed that the attackers wrote “Say no to automatic ticket” on the wall, alleging an attempt to destabilise the state’s political environment ahead of the poll. Davido’s political involvement deepened in April when he was appointed head of youth mobilisation for the Accord Party campaign council supporting Adeleke’s re-election bid. He later inaugurated the Imole youth mobilisation campaign council as part of preparations for the election.
