At least 21 people have died and several others were injured after a devastating fire tore through a hotel in New Delhi, India, on Wednesday.

According to Indian broadcaster NDTV, the blaze broke out at a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of southern New Delhi, triggering a major emergency response.

Fire official Abhilash Malik said firefighters rescued 37 people from the burning building as crews battled to bring the flames under control.

Local media reports indicated that some of those who died were foreign nationals who had travelled to India for medical treatment.

Senior administrative official Jitendra Kumar said four bodies were recovered from the scene, while at least seven injured victims were taken to hospital for treatment.

Emergency responders eventually extinguished the fire, but authorities have not yet determined the cause of the incident.

Investigations are expected to establish how the blaze started and whether any safety violations contributed to the tragedy.

The incident is one of the deadliest hotel fires reported in the Indian capital in recent years.
