A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced four men to death by hanging for their roles in the deadly attack on St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, which left more than 40 worshippers dead and over 100 others injured.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Emeka Nwite found four of the five defendants guilty of terrorism-related offences linked to the June 5, 2022 massacre.

The convicted men are Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik and Abdulhaleem Idris.

The four had been standing trial on a nine-count terrorism charge filed by the Department of State Services over their alleged involvement in the attack on St Francis Catholic Church.

The court, however, discharged and acquitted the fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, ruling that the prosecution failed to establish his guilt.

The Owo church attack shocked Nigeria and drew widespread condemnation after gunmen opened fire and detonated explosives during a Sunday service, killing dozens of worshippers and injuring many others.

According to Channels Television, the judgment brings to a close a high-profile terrorism trial that has lasted several years following one of the deadliest attacks on a place of worship in recent Nigerian history.
