A former Ogun Central senator and daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection and unfair treatment by the party leadership in Ogun State.
According to a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to Ogun APC Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo said her decision followed dissatisfaction with the process that produced Adeola Solomon as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The former lawmaker, who recently sought the APC governorship ticket, argued that the consensus arrangement did not comply with the party’s guidelines. She stated that although she had agreed to support any candidate chosen through a consensus process, she was not consulted before Adeola’s emergence was announced.
Obasanjo also alleged that some of her supporters were denied entry to the venue where the candidate was unveiled and faced intimidation during the event.
Despite her concerns, she said she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and publicly congratulated Adeola on the night he emerged as the candidate.
She further disclosed that Adeola later requested a meeting with her supporters, during which three demands were presented. According to her, he promised to respond within a week, but more than two months later no response had been received.
In her resignation letter, Obasanjo said the lack of engagement reflected a broader pattern of disregard for her contributions to the party.
> “The treatment I have received since then has reflected a consistent pattern of rejection and disrespect. When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcomed.”
Despite her departure, Obasanjo expressed gratitude to Bola Tinubu, Chief Sanusi and APC leaders in Ogun Central for the support and courtesy extended to her during her time in the party.
Obasanjo returned to active politics earlier this year after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. She subsequently declared her intention to contest the state’s governorship election under the APC platform.
The development marks a significant political setback for the Ogun APC as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 governorship race.
