Opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives have urged President Bola Tinubu to suspend political activities linked to the 2027 elections and prioritise national security and economic recovery, according to The Guardian Nigeria.
The minority caucus, led by House Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, said Nigeria is facing worsening insecurity, including killings, kidnappings and armed attacks, alongside rising economic hardship.
Agbedi called for a six-month national security and economic recovery plan, arguing that governance focus should shift away from electioneering. He also accused political actors of prioritising 2027 campaigns over citizens’ welfare.
The lawmakers referenced recent violent incidents across several states, including a deadly attack in Kaduna State where armed assailants reportedly killed multiple residents during a community raid.
In a related development, retired military and police officials, including former Kaduna State Military Governor Dangiwa Umar and ex-AIG Ade Ajakaiye, also called for urgent security reforms, including the creation of state police.
Ajakaiye cited National Human Rights Commission figures indicating over 2,000 deaths in six months, warning that the current centralised policing system is overstretched and ineffective.
The calls come as security agencies intensify operations against armed groups, while discussions continue in the National Assembly over constitutional amendments linked to state policing.
The Senate is expected to consider national security measures at an emergency sitting scheduled for June 23.
