A Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded a 19-year-old blogger, Nwanorue John Surpruchi, in connection with alleged “false and defamatory” posts targeting business executive Tony Elumelu.

According to a report published by TheCable, Surpruchi was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal intimidation. Prosecutors alleged he used his X account to circulate claims that Elumelu had divorced his wife following a DNA discovery involving his children.

Court documents cited by the prosecution stated that the posts were “false and grossly offensive”, allegedly intended to cause annoyance, insult and reputational harm. The charges were brought under sections of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty when the charges were read. His lawyer requested time to respond to the bail application, while the prosecution urged the court to remand him pending determination of the case.

The presiding judge, Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the matter to June 19 for hearing of the bail application.
