Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has called for disciplinary action against judges over what he described as questionable judicial decisions affecting Nigeria’s democratic process.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Momodu said the National Judicial Council (NJC) must sanction judicial officers whose rulings disregard established legal procedures and superior court orders. He stressed that confidence in the judiciary is central to sustaining democracy and the rule of law.
His remarks follow a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja by Justice Peter Lifu ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) to deregister the ADC and four other political parties over alleged failure to meet constitutional performance requirements.
The decision drew criticism from opposition figures and legal commentators.
Subsequently, the Court of Appeal in Abuja suspended the execution of the judgment, describing it as the highest form of judicial impertinence, pending further proceedings.
