The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has increased the operational tariff for airport cab services from N500 to N1,500 and introduced a mandatory vehicle upgrade policy, setting an October 2026 compliance deadline.
TheCable reports that the directive affects airport taxi operators at major hubs, including Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, where drivers had threatened to suspend operations over the new rules.
FAAN said the adjustments are intended to improve passenger experience, safety and service standards at Nigerian airports. It also argued that airport transport services must reflect the expectations of a modern international gateway, including clean, roadworthy and well-maintained vehicles.
The authority said the previous N500 tariff had remained unchanged for more than eight years despite rising inflation and operational costs. It added that the revised N1,500 charge is necessary to sustain airport infrastructure and services.
On the vehicle upgrade requirement, FAAN said operators were first notified in July 2024 and have already received multiple extensions, moving deadlines from January 2026 to June 2026, with a further extension under consideration to October 2026.
The agency also stated that its engagement is primarily with registered cab companies rather than associations, insisting that regulatory discussions follow formal operational structures.
FAAN added that no further extensions are expected beyond the proposed final deadline, urging operators to comply within the stipulated timeframe.
