Authorities in Lagos State have ordered an immediate escalation of waste removal operations after refuse heaps spread across major roads and neighbourhoods, according to TheCable report published on June 18, 2026.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the Ministry of Environment and related agencies to begin round-the-clock evacuation of waste across the metropolis.
In a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Gboyega Akosile, the administration said it had deployed additional resources to tackle the backlog and restore sanitation in affected areas.
The state-owned Lagos Waste Management Authority and other environmental agencies have been instructed to intensify operations, with private sector partners also expected to scale up collection efforts.
Residents have reported worsening waste accumulation across both the mainland and island, with discarded household and industrial refuse lining major roads.
Officials described the situation as temporary, insisting that “substantial progress” is being made and urging residents to remain patient as clearance operations continue.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable city, noting that ongoing interventions are aimed at stabilising waste collection systems.
