Late Poland goal denies Super Eagles victory in Warsaw friendly

Nigeria were denied victory in dramatic fashion as Poland scored deep into stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw in an international friendly in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles looked set to claim a notable away win at the PGE Narodowy Stadium before Przemysław Wiśniewski struck with virtually the final kick of the match to rescue a draw for the hosts.

According to Channels Television, Nigeria opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through a well-worked move involving Terem Moffi, whose assist led to the Super Eagles taking the lead.

Poland responded just before the interval when Kacper Potulski found the net to ensure the teams went into half-time level at 1-1.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle made several changes at the start of the second half as Nigeria sought to regain control of the contest. Philip Otele, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Paul Onuachu and Calvin Bassey were all introduced after the break.

Nigeria restored their advantage when Onuachu converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-1, putting the visitors on course for victory.

However, Poland refused to give up and snatched an equaliser five minutes into added time through Wiśniewski, ensuring both sides shared the spoils in the friendly encounter.

The result denied Nigeria a repeat of their 1-0 victory over Poland in March 2018, when former Super Eagles winger Victor Moses scored the winning goal from the penalty spot ahead of that year’s FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to another high-profile friendly against Portugal on June 10. Although the Super Eagles will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the matches are being used to assess tactical approaches and evaluate new players ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
