NIMC raises alarm over fake NIN correction website targeting Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent online portal falsely claiming to offer free corrections to National Identification Number (NIN) records.

In a public advisory issued on Tuesday, the commission said a social media post promoting a free “NIN Correction Portal” contains malicious links designed to steal personal information from unsuspecting users. The warning was reported by Channels Television.

According to NIMC, the message is a phishing scam aimed at deceiving members of the public into disclosing sensitive identity data.

The commission reassured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected against unauthorised access.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the agency stated.

The commission urged Nigerians not to click on suspicious links or engage with unauthorised websites claiming to provide identity-related services. Instead, citizens seeking to update or correct their NIN records were advised to use NIMC’s official self-service portal or visit authorised enrolment centres nationwide.

NIMC also encouraged the public to verify information through its official communication channels and report any suspicious messages offering identity management services outside approved platforms.

The warning comes amid increasing concerns about cybercriminals targeting personal information through fake websites, social media posts and phishing campaigns.

The commission stressed that all NIN modifications, updates and corrections should only be carried out through approved NIMC channels to avoid identity theft and fraud.
