The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday said the suspect responsible for the killing of a two-year-old boy, Ivan Omhonrina, two weeks ago, had been arrested.

Omhonrina was killed by a stray bullet during an operation by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at Okpanam in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The NDLEA had said the incident occurred when its men were raiding a drug joint in the area.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, disclosed to journalists in Asaba, the state capital, that the suspect was already in custody.

He, however, did not disclose the identity of the suspect.

“The suspect who allegedly killed the two-year-old boy a few weeks ago is in our custody. The investigation is almost completed and he will be charged to court,” he simply said.

Meanwhile, the command, on Tuesday, paraded a 22-year-old kidnapper, Ojokor Jeffrey, and eight others.

Parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Asaba, the state capital, Edafe said the suspected kidnappers were the ones terrorising the Warri, Sapele and Uvwie areas of the state.

He said, “Acting on credible intelligence gathered on a criminal gang, the DPO Owvian Aladja Division led a surveillance team to the scrap yard in Ekpan and arrested one Ojokor Jeffrey, 22, who is the leader of the criminal gang terrorising the Warri–Sapele areas.

“Further interrogation of the suspect led to the arrest of his gang members, Musa Amadu (27), Abu Mohammed (30), Mohammed Saidu (23), Anas Idris (20), Abubakar Muktar (23) and Kamilu Alasa (21).”

The PPRO said items recovered from the suspects included two locally-made double barrel guns and 11 live cartridges.

Also paraded were two suspects who stole a Hilux van belonging to the Ondo State Government but attached to the Ministry of Lands and Infrastructure.

The police spokesman said the vehicle was removed from where it was parked at Owo town in Ondo State, noting that the vehicle had been recovered and the case would be transferred to the Ondo State Police Command.

According to Edafe, the command received a distress call on July 30, 2023, from Ondo State and it was suspected that the vehicle was already in Delta State.

He said the state CP quickly detailed the CP-Decoy Squad to embark on an intelligence-led investigation.

He said the team trailed the car to Patani, and the DPO Patani alerted the police patrol team stationed on the Patani expressway where the vehicle was intercepted.

He explained that the vehicle with number plate OD 231 A10 was recovered and two suspects, Tochukwu Nnamani (22) and Chukwuma Unue (38), were arrested.

He said the suspects claimed that the vehicle was handed over to them by one Efe in Ughelli for them to deliver to one Chief Ojukwu at Mbaima town in River State.
