A Divisional Police Officer in Oyigbo has been removed by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, following allegations of extortion and abuse of office.
The officer, attached to the Oyigbo Police Division, was accused by a rights activist of collecting ₦500,000 from a complainant allegedly detained without a lawful offence. The activist also alleged that the officer filed questionable charges in a separate dispute involving a woman and her estranged husband.
The allegations, which circulated on social media, further claimed the woman was remanded in a custodial centre based on the charges, prompting public concern and calls for accountability.
In response, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed it had received the complaints and said the officer had been immediately removed from duty to allow for a full investigation.
Police spokesperson ASP Blessing Agabe stated that the command would not tolerate misconduct or abuse of office, adding that the investigation would be conducted in a transparent and impartial manner.
The command reiterated its commitment to professionalism and restoring public trust in policing across the state.
