US-Iran War: Gulf clashes escalate despite ceasefire talks

The United States and Iran remain far from ending their ongoing conflict despite renewed diplomatic efforts and ceasefire proposals. Fresh clashes erupted around the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides accusing each other of violating an already fragile truce.

According to Reuters, Iranian missile and drone attacks targeted the United Arab Emirates, while US forces reportedly struck Iranian-linked vessels attempting to access ports in the Gulf. Iran accused Washington of repeatedly breaching ceasefire terms, while the US said its actions were aimed at enforcing maritime restrictions.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz remains central to the crisis. Iranian forces have reportedly restricted non-Iranian shipping in the waterway, disrupting global energy routes and increasing pressure on oil markets. US officials are awaiting Tehran’s response to a proposed deal that could lead to a temporary ceasefire and the reopening of the strait.

Reuters also reported that the US has imposed additional sanctions targeting individuals and firms linked to Iran’s drone production network, including entities in China and Hong Kong. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticised international allies for not doing enough to support efforts to secure shipping routes in the Gulf.

The conflict, which has already caused major regional instability and concerns over energy supplies, continues despite diplomatic mediation efforts involving Qatar, Pakistan and other regional actors.

Military tensions rise in the Gulf as US and Iranian forces clash near the Strait of Hormuz during stalled ceasefire negotiations.
