WHO reports sharp fall in suspected Ebola cases from 906 to 116

Suspected Ebola infections under investigation have fallen sharply from 906 to 116, according to the World Health Organization (World Health Organization), as reported by Channel Television.

The figures point to a significant reduction in alerts being treated as potential Ebola cases following intensified screening, laboratory testing and surveillance measures across affected regions.

Channel Television reported that the WHO said many of the initial suspected cases were later ruled out after confirmatory testing, helping to clarify the scale of the situation and reduce alarm in communities where alerts were first recorded.

Health authorities have been working with national disease control bodies to strengthen rapid response systems, improve case verification and ensure faster laboratory turnaround times. The drop in suspected cases suggests improved accuracy in reporting and monitoring systems rather than a confirmed spike in infections.

Ebola remains a high-priority viral haemorrhagic fever, and global health agencies continue to stress the importance of early detection, isolation of confirmed cases and coordinated public health response to prevent outbreaks from escalating.

WHO says suspected Ebola cases have fallen from 906 to 116, signalling progress in surveillance and response.

The statement said Abubakar died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors. He and his wife were abducted on 30 May while travelling through Katsina State. The abductors were earlier reported to have demanded the release of detained fighters and the return of seized livestock in exchange for their freedom. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the development as a “dark moment” for Katsina State, adding that the government remained committed to strengthening the fight against banditry and improving security across affected communities. Security agencies had reportedly made several attempts to rescue the retired general, but these efforts were unsuccessful.
