The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has waived the screening requirements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election primaries.
The decision was announced by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka after the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held its 188th meeting on Wednesday.
According to Morka, the NWC resolved that Tinubu should be regarded as “duly screened” in line with the party’s constitution for participation in the forthcoming APC presidential primary.
“This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of APC to organise and supervise the party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers, in the best interest of the party,” the statement said.
The APC leadership explained that the waiver followed what it described as overwhelming endorsements and votes of confidence received by the president from key organs and stakeholders of the party.
These include the Progressive Governors Forum, members and leadership of the National Assembly, and other party structures during the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, alongside other statutory meetings.
The party also argued that Tinubu had already undergone screening before the 2022 APC presidential primaries, making another appearance before a screening panel unnecessary.
“It noted further that, as the incumbent president and leader of our great party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant and unnecessary,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, James Faleke, has purchased Tinubu’s nomination form for the 2027 presidential race.
Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
