Activist Aisha Yesufu has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while also declaring her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat.
Yesufu announced her defection in a statement posted on her X handle on Wednesday evening, saying her decision was driven by her continued support for Peter Obi.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
The activist said she was joining the NDC not only as a member but also as a senatorial aspirant for the FCT.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC. This time, I am joining the NDC not just as a member but also as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.
Yesufu stated that she had completed all obligations within the ADC before leaving the party, noting that she served in several leadership capacities during her time there.
“I have tidied up all my obligations to the ADC, ensuring a clean transition. I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” she said.
Her move comes days after Obi and former New Nigeria Peoples Party presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso also joined the NDC.
The politicians reportedly cited persistent internal crises, including court cases and leadership disputes within the ADC, as reasons for their defection.
