An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced two kidnappers to death by hanging after finding them guilty of a kidnapping offence in a landmark judgment aimed at tackling rising insecurity in the state.
According to The Guardian, the court ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction and death sentence of the defendants. The judgment underscores the judiciary’s determination to impose stiff penalties on those involved in kidnapping and related crimes.
Kidnapping has remained a major security challenge in parts of Ekiti and other states across Nigeria, with several communities recording abductions for ransom in recent years. The latest ruling comes amid growing calls for stronger action against criminal gangs operating in the region.
The court held that the gravity of the offence warranted the maximum punishment prescribed by law. Family members of victims and residents welcomed the judgment, expressing hope that it would serve as a deterrent to others involved in kidnapping activities.
The case adds to a series of recent convictions secured by courts in Ekiti as authorities intensify efforts to combat kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes.
