The Federal Government has banned commercial motorcycles and tricycles from using the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as part of efforts to protect the newly constructed road from misuse and deterioration.

The announcement was made by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Olufemi Dare, in a statement issued on Sunday and reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), according to Punch.

Dare said the restriction takes effect this week and is intended to preserve the highway and ensure its long-term sustainability.

He also announced that indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles would no longer be allowed on the coastal highway or on bridges across Lagos State.

In addition, the ministry prohibited the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as unacceptable.

Dare warned that violators would face strict enforcement measures, adding that road signs showing the new restrictions had already been installed along the route.

He said task force officials would be stationed at strategic locations to enforce compliance with the new rules.

Describing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure project, Dare urged all road users to comply with the directives in the interest of public safety.

He added that protecting the highway would help extend its lifespan and preserve its value for Nigerians.
