The first group of 268 repatriated Nigerians South Africa has arrived in Lagos following recent xenophobic-related violence.
The returnees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Thursday at about 10:30am aboard an Air Peace flight. The evacuation exercise was initially planned for earlier in the week but was delayed due to documentation challenges.
Authorities say more than 1,000 Nigerians had registered interest in returning home, with screening processes carried out over several days and later extended to accommodate additional applicants.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its mission in Pretoria, stated that it had secured waivers with South African authorities to ensure that affected Nigerians, including those with immigration-related issues, could leave without being detained. Officials added that further arrangements had been made for reception, documentation and reintegration support upon arrival.
The development comes as diplomatic and consular efforts continue between both countries amid recurring tensions affecting foreign nationals in South Africa.
